ok, hello all! well, i am still debating on what exactly to do for my topic for term paper, and i was wondering a few things. in your guys' opinion, do you think Cathy, the beast, could fit with this, "In uncertainty I am certain that underneath their topmost layers of frailty men want to be good and want to be loved." -Steinbeck. I can't really think of any time in the book where Cathy wants to be good or loved except maybe at the end when she leaves all she has to Aron. But why would Steinbeck put that in the book, if he didn't truly believe it about all his characters? And omg, if anyone knows where the heck that quote is in the book, please tell me, i cant find it and i dont feel like looking through 725 pages. And i was commenting to tiff and carps how interesting it is that all the "evil" characters' names begin with the letter C - cain, cyrus, charles, cal and cathy. and the "good" characters with the letter A - alice trask, adam, aron, abra. how fun is that!!! oh, and how interesting is it that carps name begins with C! hahaha, jk. but ok, that was just some stuff and hopefully you guys will respond to this bc i need help, and it would just be interesting. hope you guys have a good weekend. bjos, ang.

Okay everybody, a few thoughts:
first of all, about my "nickname," some of you heard my excuse for having that on there but for those who haven't, i thought that was my hint for my password, thus the name "fun night." Peter- i appreciate your analysis of it, that was humorous, and some people have called me weird before so i won't get too offended.....lol ne-ways......what carps said was interesting about separating us from the beast. I definately think Steinback used his characters to represent that. Cathy was definately portrayed as being a "beast," or someone not quite human, but at times showing human qualities. For those of you who haven't finished the book, i won't tell you the human qualities that she shows cuz i want you to read it yourself!! it's amazing!! man i just really love this book. I was looking over my annotations and there are like 50 quotes that could be thesis statements, all of them pretty deep and powerful.
Well i guess that's about it......oh yeah, I DID CHANGE MY NICKNAME TO.....guessy guessy.... EL SNIPER....... i just hope it shows up.....pretty sweet huh?? i thought so, alrighty have a good night gente!!!- Michael J. Roome #7

We are more than beasts
Well....I thought that I would post this thought after a discussion that I had with Angie today. There was a point in the socratic circle yesterday when I had wanted to share this thought from the book, but there were so many times yesterday that I wanted to share, but all of you were keeping the ball in play and it is much more about you guys playing...I always find it funny when the oldtimers want to take over the ballgame as in when they come to scrimmage.....It reminds me of Meet the Fockers when he hits the ball down on the sister-in-law....ANYWAY!!!....
All of this to say that there is a great quote in the book in chapter 55 around part 3. "Lee said, 'Help him, Adam--help him. Give him a chance. Let him be free. That's all a man has over the beasts. Free him! Bless him!"
What exactly is it that we humans have over the beasts? Is it that we can bless and be blessed? Does Steinbeck present some characters as beasts--like Cathy? Are there levels of humans and beasts? Sei la....hehhehehehehhe....just some random thoughts....

name thing
well...in response to Peter's question about who teh heinzhummer2 is...i have a guess that would make sense that it is kev since his fotolog name is that too...so thats who i think it is peter and you dont have to be confuzled anymore. ok?
and about where names come from, not liek mike that typed his question thingy in the wrong spot, my name comes from a pretty basic background, its just my name in a shorter and i guess cute way. i began to use it when a friend of mine did a cute little arrangement with it for msn and now whatever internet thing i usual put rachie...or RaChiE because i think it loos cooler! hahaha so yeah...i guess names have to do with what people like, what they are called, the year they were born is usually in it (like tiffs) or whatever just a nickname or what they are thinking about at the moment, soemthing that will make others identify as being him because it sounds or looks like the person or soemthing hte person would say. so yeah...i dont know...just a thought on the whole where the names come from thing that peter put.
and i do think that sometime we could go into more philosophical things...but not too deep! hahaha

fun nights?
mike, mookers, homerun buddy michael j roome #7 the sniper,
why?
why have you chosen such a name? what was your motivation? i yearn for such bold confidence in the first thing that pops into my head- the way you had it... it makes no sense. nights can be fun, but why would it be a screenname? are you thinking too much about fun, or nights? this reminds me of a venerated Emily Dickenson poem, "Wild Nights" My pagan english teacher in my PACA-sized cedarville public school in ohio made us read exerpts from this sensual poem filled to overflowing with evil connotations, such as the thoughts that come to mind when "might i moor tonight in thee" is read. mook, you are either a mook or a really weird person.... but you're cool and i know you "accidentally" put it as your screenname, because the word "screenname" seemed foreign to you at the time, so you, in your confused state, decided to throw the world offbalance with your

for future reference...
who the dickens is heinzhummer2? sounds kinda alienish or like not normal. either creativity at its best or a search in a brand dictionary under the letter 'h'. no offense, just cold feelings. jk. maybe we should get back (if we ever were there) to writing stuff instead of writing about our blights with this blog...
we could get philosophical, like talking about deep stuff. we could tell jokes. we could tell true stories. we could make up a story that everyone elaborates on, each postage (my personal favorite idea...)
... possibilities are endless. we just have to make it happen.
so get going, if you're bored and don't want to do homework.. you could say "i had a lot to do in AP English..." as an excuse for your other teachers and just write a hugantic story.
i love you guys, except i still don't know who the ketchupcar II is...

(real post) carps, i really have contributed...
... really- maybe 3 days after the original post, i added a comment, but i haven't read many of the other posts: aus's huge-lettered one creeped me out. east of eden is the bomb - it shocked me that it could have such an impact. i feel wierd saying anything at all about the end of the book, but really: the conversation between 'the girl' and 'the guy that thought he was bad' showed how love is supposed to happen - not offering 'medicine', but acknowledging the same faults and loving past them in each other. i loved it. it probably will change my life more than i expected.
peace.

my thought of the day...
well ang... thank you for helping me in my scientific research... i postulated that no matter how absurd an idea is or how hard u try to put dripping sarcasm into writing on a blog, there will always be someone out there who will take it seriously... im talking about the prison break comment... just a test to see who would actually respond to that seriously... thank you... this research will be for posterity... now... on the topic of finding a topic to blog about... im going to bring up a great little greek phrase that tim knows about and which appeared on the entrance to the temple to apollo at delphi and also above the oracle's door in the Matrix (albeit, the latin version)... that little phrase is γνῶθι σεαυτόν... which translated means "know thyself"... i have a question about that... if one spends so much time learning to know one's self, how does one grow?? any thoughts??
